In the age of 30 I gave up my boring live as a normal working man and moved with my family, wife and two little children, into a lonesome cottage in the Swiss mountains to become an organic farmer. I renovated the for more than 30 years not inhabited house and re-cultivated the land. Beside the vegetable garden we kept sheep’s, cows, pigs and chicken. I loved my animals, but with very bad feelings I also killed and ate them. Presumably because of my education and the influence of society I thought, that this is the way life goes on. The worst experience was, as I had to bring our first pig, we kept since it was a baby, to the butcher. Because it was not possible to drive to our house I had to walk with the pig about 15 minutes. My children called it Felix and he trusted and followed me free walking like a dog. As we came to the road, the butcher waited already with a transporter to bring Felix into the slaughterhouse. I am not going to tell you the story how I got him into the car. It is just too heavy, for you as for me, although it happened about 27 years ago. This experience followed me since then during the day and in my dreams at night but I kept on eating meat. I already told you why, because I thought that’s the way the world goes round. Years later, I wasn’t a farmer anymore, we were invited to a low-roasted pork tenderloin. I felt so very bad by eating it, that I nearly got sick. The following, most horrible nightmares, also built up on the experience years before with Felix, made it impossible for me to eat pork meat anymore. But it needed another couple of years to realize, that it is not necessary to kill and eat my best friends, the animals. Now I’ve been living for more than five years vegan and I feel great. Since than I read a lot of books about this theme and I found unbelievable many reasons to be vegan. I stand by my way of life under all circumstances and only very rarely I made bad experiences with people. It is a little bit sad, that I had to live for 52 years to realize all that. But I am anyway happy about, that I discovered this lifestyle. Better late, then never. Getting vegan was one of my biggest and best decisions I made in my whole life.
