Hello, we are Nicole and Toby.
It all started in July 2015, when the US dentist shot and killed Cecil the Lion. We remember watching the news and being absolutely infuriated, ‘how can someone do that for fun?’. We would then turn over the channel and tuck into our breakfast – a bacon sandwich. However, one day, something just clicked, suddenly the pig in our bread did not seem any different to the murdered lion. We discussed this and toyed with the idea of becoming vegetarian, but how could we possibly live without meat?
Over the next few months we tried cutting out meat on and off, which normally led to a massive increase in the consumption of dairy, nothing really stuck until the end of November 2015 when we came across a documentary called ‘Cowspiracy’. After watching it and receiving a wake up call about the environmental destruction of the planet we call home, we were instant vegetarians. We had some fish which was in our freezer a few times throughout December and ended up cooking a salmon on Christmas day (our first dinner without a turkey in 26 years, our age at the time). Something however, was still nagging, we didn’t feel satisfied, as though it just wasn’t enough. The word vegan was something we had read more about during December when researching veggie meals etc… but it just seemed so extreme, unattainable perhaps?
Boxing day came and with nothing much else to do, we started flicking through Netflix etc…, we had already heard about a film on YouTube at this point called ‘Earthlings’ so with nothing else to watch and a general feeling of dissatisfaction with everything, we decided to watch it. We have been vegan ever since. We can honestly say, our vegan journey could not have been easier, mostly because we did it for the animals and the environment, the other reasons such as health came a short while later.
